FAQs

Are there any disadvantages of Eco-IVF compared to standard IVF?

While we remain committed to offering a low cost IVF program for patients who are unable to afford standard IVF treatments, clinical evidence indicates that standard protocols remain the most efficient form of IVF.

When CHR first established Eco-IVF, a form of low intensity, low cost IVF, patient outcomes were closely monitored as part of CHR’s Continuous Quality Improvement Program. Once we had enough patients in the program, we conducted a comparison of outcomes and patient costs, which revealed the following in comparison to standard IVF:

  • Eco-IVF produces fewer eggs and embryos, and therefore only rarely enough embryos for cryopreservation of extra embryos.
  • Eco-IVF also produces lower fresh cycle and cumulative pregnancy rates.
  • Because of lower pregnancy rates, the cost of establishing a pregnancy via Eco-IVF is similar to the cost of establishing a pregnancy with regular IVF.

In summary, patients using Eco-IVF rather than standard IVF may take longer to get pregnant and cost benefits cannot be guaranteed. The only obvious benefits from Eco-IVF over standard IVF lie in the lower effort required and lower medication dosages patients are exposed to. Especially for older women and couples with complex infertility cases who require more individualized approach to fertility treatments, standard fertility treatment may be a more appropriate and more cost-effective option.

How do I know if I need IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology that involves fertilizing a woman’s eggs with sperm outside of the body and then transferring the resulting embryos back into the uterus for pregnancy. This infertility treatment may be indicated if:

  • The woman has damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • The ovaries do not respond to infertility medications
  • The man has low semen count
  • The man has sperm that does not move well (low sperm motility)
  • There are immunological factors
  • The woman has significant endometriosis infertility
  • The infertility is “unexplained
